RPL Process Explained

Please read before making your initial payment:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process used by National Skills to recognise the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained through work and learning—whether in Australia or overseas. This may include paid employment, self-employment, life experience, and other activities such as volunteering.

For current units of competency you have already achieved previously, we apply credit transfers. In this case, you are to provide a statement of attainment listing these units issued from the current regestered RTO. This can reduce the amount of evidence required and may shorten the time needed to complete your assessment.

What you are paying for:

RPL is a formal assessment service. You are paying for a qualified Trainer/Assessor to:
  • review the evidence you provide.
  • compare it against the requirements of each unit of competency.
  • carry out a interview with you.
  • determine whether you are competent (or what gaps may need to be addressed via training).

If your assessment demonstrates competence in all the relevant units required (and where applicable, the qualification outcome) it can be issued as a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment.

Australian student fees are published on our website. International students, please refer to the FEES tab on the qualification page as this will apply.

What evidence do I need to provide?

Evidence can come in many forms. Depending on the unit, this may include:

  • workplace documents (job sheets, reports, procedures, risk assessments, plans),
  • photos/videos of current and previous work completed that align with the units,
  • licences or tickets,
  • previous training results/statements of attainment,
  • references or third-party reports from supervisors/clients,
  • records of work history (resume, ABN details, invoices, contracts), and
  • any other documents that show you consistently perform the required tasks.

How the RPL process works:

  1. Make the initial payment to commence. This provides you access to begin your RPL.
  2. Download, complete and upload all required forms provided by National Skills.
  3. Upload your supporting evidence.
  4. Your Trainer/Assessor will review your evidence and may contact you to clarify information or request additional evidence where needed.
  5. Once your assessment is finalised and if any gap training is identified, final payment is required.
  6. In the case of additional gap training being required, National Skills can provide this and when completed we will issue your nationally recognised outcome.

Overseas Applicants (Additional Support):

Training standards and workplace regulations can vary between countries. Overseas applicants may need additional knowledge to meet Australian compliance requirements, such as:

  • Work Health and Safety (WHS) expectations,
  • Australian industry regulations, and
  • relevant professional codes of practice.

To support overseas applicants, National Skills provides additional help to cover this. The RPL fee includes overseas enrolment and access to a short non-accredited online course designed to help you meet these Australian requirements.

After your initial RPL payment, your Trainer/Assessor will email you a password-protected link to access the course. You can complete this course while gathering and uploading your evidence for assessment.

A statement confirming completion of the course will be provided with your qualification once the final payment has been made.
